Alexander van Slobbe (1959) is one of the most versatile Dutch designers. He achieved international success with his labels Orson & Bodil (founded in 1988), SO (1993–2003) and orson + bodil (from 2003). Van Slobbe’s modus operandi implies a personal act of resistance to the fashion system: rather than the obligation to come up with something new every six months, he focuses on innovative constructions, materials and collaborations with artists, photographers, architects, craftsmen and other designers. After two decades of designing, there is now a book to which many people have contributed. In Alexander van Slobbe, and… and… and… the story of Van Slobbe himself is combined with essays and interviews about the relationship between fashion design and art, developments in the international fashion world and the quest for craftsmanship. Archive material is presented alongside new visuals. Rather than focus on the cliché of the fashion world, this book explores the joys and discipline, rhythm and pace at which a collection is created.
