About the author: Ellen Wilkinson (1891-1947) was recognised as a lively public speaker, and addressed public meetings throughout the UK in support of strikers. She was born in Manchester, was the first woman on the city council, and was a Labour MP for Jarrow, and Middlesbrough East. She became the first female Minister of Education, in the 1945 Labour government.
