Bringing together artworks now held in both private and public collections, Wendy Loncaster and Malcolm Shields have reunited Fred Elwell’s wonderful paintings within the pages of their beautifully illustrated book, containing more than 140 full colour pictures.
Elwell’s subjects include both portraits and landscapes, but his studies of people at work and play are particularly interesting, capturing moments in time - maids working in the kitchen of an inn, circus performers poised at the entrance of a Big Top, friends taking tea together - we are glimpsing a lost hidden world.

Wendy Loncaster was awarded an Open University first-class honours degree in the History of Art in 1988 and is the leading authority on Fred Elwell. She has also written a book about Fred’s wife, Mary D. Elwell SWA – Stepping from the Shadows and collaborated with Malcolm Shilelds on a book about talented Hull artist, Walter Goodin – Above All, the Sky.
Malcolm Shields lectured in numismatics, specialising in Celtic Britain and Roman Occupation. A lifetime’s interest in the Hull School of Marine Painters and the East Riding of Yorkshire Artists led him to become a recognised authority on the subject.
