This issue of Garageland focuses on historical and contemporary artists and discourse... it explores a broad range of art making and artistic styles, and focuses on numerous long-standing political subjects like race, class and sexual orientation. Within this space, I hope to encompass a plurality of perspectives, and in doing so, sometimes reveal a provocation of contradictions.
Arlene Leis Guest Editor
Highlights of the issue include a portfolio of (Difficult) Women artworks, fashion notes (handbags to cowboy boots), interviews with contemporary artists Gaye Chen, Güler Ates, Kathy Dalwood and Ilona Szalay, profiles of difficult women in the long 18th century and a look at the career of pioneering artist Annie Swynnerton.
Elsewhere our regular Film Club section includes writing on Tuesday Weld, Lesbian Cinema and The Women(1939); and in our WWW section we feature Grant Foster's painting Youth Serum, A touring exhibition about Christine Keeler, feminist artist Barbara T Smith, two aid projects that put women first, and a look at Cathie Pilkington's studio at Dorich House.
