Having authored or co-authored over 50 books, and more than 1 000 scientific and popular papers, Gideon F. Smith is South Africa’s most prolific author on succulents of the Old and New Worlds. He is an Honorary Professor at the Nelson Mandela University, and a research associate at the University of Coimbra in Portugal. Ben-Erik van Wyk is a professor of Botany at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa, and currently holds a National Research Chair in Indigenous Plant Use. His research in plant systematics has broadened to include ethnobotany and the traditional and contemporary uses of plants. He is the author or co-author of more than 300 scientific publications and is known for his local and international full-colour books on medicinal, edible, and other useful plants.
