Two projects about the city of Jakarta by visual artist/architect Stani Michiels and by artist Arjan van Helmond are central to this book. From their different perspectives, they try to get a grip on the residential culture in Jakarta, the experience of private versus public space, the consequences of urban migration, but also the infrastructure, densification and cohesion of the city as a whole. Many megacities in developing countries are undergoing explosive growth, the complexity of which in cultural, social, political and economic levels is developing unprecedentedly. This phenomenon is rightly receiving increasing attention within the architecture and art world. The essays by Charles Esche, Gerardo Mosquera, Abidin Kusno and Agung Jenong give the book a theoretical framework.
