A fascinating account of the history of this Island from the U.S. conquest in 1898 up through the period in which Ferdinand Marcos was replaced by Corazon Aquino.
Although originally from New York State in the U.S. Pomeroy, who also previously wrote about other aspects of the political struggles in the Philippines, had an extensive knowledge of the country, having first been stationed there during WWII as a soldier in the U.S. Army Air Force. After the war he stayed in the Philippines, marrying a Fillipina leader of the resistance.
Eventually, he was held, along with his wife, as a political prisoner for 10 years. After his release Pomeroy and his wife moved to England, were they continued to work for the cause of true independence for the country.
