HAVANA highlights two distinct historical moments in the art and cultural politics of Havana: the 1960s, and 50 years later, the post-2010s. At the heart of the issue sits the 12th Havana Biennial, featuring curatorial statements and dossiers comprising the work of over 50 artists presented at the Biennial. We conceive of Havana as an ongoing project. In the 1960s it was a project of decolonized cosmopolitanism, the capital of the “Third World,” and an ex- perimental ground of socialism. Of course, it was then also a projection—of dreamworlds, images of redistributed power, utopian playgrounds for the European Left, new worlds of belonging for the disenfranchised and exiled, etc. Today Havana is a new project with different projections: economic experiments and investments, differentiated mobilities and poverties. This issue tells the story of these disparate times.
