What is presented here as art of silent violence is part of a project of such open and yet precise intent that it has elicited some sixty unmistakably distinct responses from the most important contemporary artists worldwide. As different as these responses may be - covering a vast range of forms and materials, media and codes - they all have one feature in common. It may be a fleeting flash in the dark, it may be blatantly explicit, but it is always there: the rejection of the singular, unique work of art, the repudiation of the original. The editions presented here - prints, photographs, multiples, small sculptures and mass-market consumables - are often situated on the fringe of traditional art. They all share the quest for new possibilities beyond the strict definitions, useless demarcations and mental constraints inherent in the traditional concept of art.
